The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Canadian Tire's fourth quarter financial results for 2024 fell short of the Street's expectations. The Globe's David Leeder writes that National Bank Financial analyst Vishal Shreedhar notes, however, that "transient headwinds" impacted the retailer's performance. He says that there are now "green shoots visible," indicating that the trends for the current quarter are "encouraging." Mr. Shreedhar gave his share target a $6 trim to $170. Analysts on average target the shares at $159.55. Mr. Shreedhar says in a note: "Canadian Tire noted that Q4/24 started slow (unseasonable weather for the first two months, Black Friday shift, Canada Post strike, etc.). Canadian Tire estimated the strike impacted CTR sssg [same-store sales growth] by more than 100 basis points, in addition to extra costs. December was strong and Canadian Tire indicated optimism on its Q1/25 QTD trends. We view this to suggest that Canadian Tire remains on track for solid EPS growth in 2025, although we acknowledge heightened macro-economic uncertainty. Canadian Tire will provide an update on its strategy on March 6, 2025. We also expect an update on Canadian Tire's view on tariffs in May, 2025."
