Globe/CP say Red Sea conflict affects Cdn Tire, others

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Jan. 16, edition that Canadian shippers are starting to feel the strain of recent attacks on cargo vessels in the Red Sea, as container rates rise and boats roll in late on the East Coast. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that data from the Port of Halifax show that 57 of the 87 ships slated to berth at the port over the next four weeks are now expected to reach the terminal at least a day behind schedule, with some running more than two weeks late. Industry research firm Drewry says the average price of shipping containers has doubled since mid-December, when Houthi militants in Yemen stepped up attacks on commercial boats to protest against Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip. Shipping Federation of Canada chief executive officer Chris Hall says the delays have left importers scrambling, with stock stalled en route to Canadian shores and shelves. "It was staggering, the number of ships that have diverted" -- more than 350, according to transport giant Kuehne+Nagel. "That change adds time and cost onto the end goods," says Mr. Hall, whose organization represents companies including Canadian Tire, Home Depot Canada and Hudson's Bay.
