The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, April 20, edition that National Bank Financial analyst Vishal Shreedhar has reaffirmed his "outperform" call on Canadian Tire. The Globe's David Leeder writes in the Eye On Equities column that Mr. Shreedhar gave his share target a $6 boost to $201. Analysts on average target the Class A shares at $199.50. The Globe says when Canadian Tire announces its first quarter results on May 11, Mr. Shreedhar expects to see "soft" sales results. Mr. Shreedhar says in a note: "Our review suggests that discretionary non-experiential spending has softened year-over-year. We expect tepid sales performance (CTC estimates a revenue impact of $150-million in H1/23; majority of impact in Q1/23). ... We expect financial segment results to remain resilient, reflecting continued solid unemployment data and relatively controlled aging rates at Glacier Credit Card Trust. We understand management expects incrementally higher promotional intensity in discretionary categories in 2023. Our review of North American peer commentary indicates a similar theme. Canadian Tire additionally indicated expectations of a more constrained demand environment, particularly in H1/23."
