The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that investors' return to megacap U.S. technology stocks as a driver of the S&P 500 has garnered attention in finance circles but the role of Shopify in pushing the S&P/TSX composite higher is not getting nearly the attention it should. The Globe's Scott Barlow, in his weekly compendium of notable events, says that year-to-date, the domestic equity benchmark is higher by 560 points or 2.9 per cent. Shopify on its own is responsible for 256 upside points -- 46 per cent of the total move -- according to Bloomberg data. The second-biggest contributor to index returns is also a technology stock, Constellation Software, but it is responsible for only 74 index points or 13.2 per cent of returns. The biggest detractors from index returns were Nutrien (67 points), Toronto-Dominion Bank (48), Bank of Montreal (34), Cenovus Energy (34) and Suncor Energy (28). Mr. Barlow points out that as far as Shopify is concerned, when an upside move in market returns is this dependent on one stock, it is a clear sign of a lack of depth and a fragile rally.
