The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, June 16, edition that Scotia Capital analysts believe the copper market is facing a significant multiyear net deficit due to strong demand from global electrification and ongoing supply challenges, as highlighted by Grasberg and Kamoa-Kakula. The Globe's David Leeder writes in the Eye On Equities column that the Scotiabank analysts say in a client report titled The Copper Market Is Still Tighter than You Think: "Based on our relatively constrained supply expectations (net of markedly higher scrap), we estimate that global consumption growth of only 0.9 per cent is sufficient to keep the Cu market in balance this year, with a slightly higher average growth CAGR [compound annual growth rate] of only 1.9 per cent pa required over the 2026-2028 period to maintain balance (vs. robust 2024-2025 growth of 3.6 per cent and 3.7 per cent, and long-term growth of 2.9 per cent pa since 1960). Anticipated new medium-term supply growth appears grossly insufficient to balance the market." The Scotiabank analysts have reaffirmed their "sector outperform" recommendation for Capstone Copper. They gave their share target a $2.50 boost to $18. Analysts on average target the shares at $17.09.
