The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Oct. 3, edition that Ottawa is moving forward with its plan to build a high-speed rail line connecting Toronto to Quebec City. The Globe's Marcus Gee writes that Alto, the Crown corporation overseeing the project, is preparing to present the proposed route for the first stage of the 1,000-kilometre line, which will link Ottawa and Montreal. The corporation has already begun acquiring the land needed to support the project. The Prime Minister is enthusiastic about the project, saying it will boost the economy by $35-billion and create over 50,000 jobs. Mark Carney emphasized last spring that it's cost-effective, sustainable and will enhance community connectivity while being faster. Farmers and homeowners are worried the new line will consume valuable agricultural land and disrupt rural tranquility. Politicians are also involved, with Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon saying in June that a stop in Kingston would increase costs by billions and extend the route. The projected cost is already rising. The Parliamentary Budget Officer said last week it could be $75-billion to $113-billion, considerably more than the government's estimate of $60-billion to $90-billion.
