The National Post reports in its Wednesday, April 8, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed concerns about his finance minister's ties to a high-speed train project, but the Conservative opposition is calling for an ethics investigation. The Post's Simon Tuck writes that Mr. Carney said Francois-Philippe Champagne followed all the rules when his spouse was hired as a senior executive at Alto, the organization managing the government's plan to build high-speed rail between Toronto and Quebec City. "This is a good situation, because we have the partner who can pursue her career," Mr. Carney told reporters, while "the minister of finance can do his responsibilities." Mr. Carney also said that Canada's ethics system needs to allow spouses and other family members to have careers. "So we have to look at them as individuals. We need to have a system that will enable them to have those careers," he said. The PM was addressing media reports on Monday about a September letter from Mr. Champagne to Mr. Carney concerning potential conflicts, including the recent hiring of his spouse, Annemarie Gaudet, by Alto. Alto is a wholly owned subsidiary of the federal government and is expected to cost up to $90 billion.
