The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Canadian National Railway executives believe that wildfires and tariff threats won't significantly impact shipping volumes this year, following their earnings beat and raised financial projections for 2026. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that CN has reopened tracks in Northwestern Ontario after a week-long closure due to wildfires that forced one crew to flee and rerouted traffic through the United States. On Friday chief operating officer Patrick Whitehead said, "We currently do not expect a significant impact to our business." CN chief executive officer Tracy Robinson expressed optimism that President Donald Trump's new 50-per-cent tariffs on Canadian goods, effective Aug. 19, could lead to a "constructive agreement" among the U.S., Canada and Mexico. "What we've embedded in our guidance as we look forward is a tariff level that looks a lot like what it is right now," Ms. Robinson said. CN raised its full-year guidance Friday, forecasting mild volume growth versus the flattish figures predicted six months ago. It also now expects adjusted diluted earnings per share growth in the mid-to-high single digits instead of the low single-digit range.
