The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that federal regulators are probing the situation that caused Canadian National Railway train operators to flee from wildfires in Northwestern Ontario. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that the crew abandoned their train and ran down the tracks after their locomotive was engulfed in flames while waiting for another train near Armstrong, Ont. The men survived but were treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation. Transport Canada is "conducting follow-up oversight" on trains operating in the area to see if there were any violations of the Railway Safety Act, ministry spokesman Hicham Ayoun said on Friday. CN said it would co-operate with regulators and is conducting its own review. Transport Canada's Mr. Ayoun said that ministry officials will collaborate with Employment and Social Development Canada to investigate potential health and safety violations of the Canadian Labour Code in federally regulated workplaces. "Transport Canada will not hesitate to implement operational restrictions or protective measures when necessary," Mr. Ayoun said. The Transportation Safety Board said it is gathering information on the incident. It said discussing next steps is premature.
