The Financial Post reports in its Friday, May 3, edition that railway workers are moving closer to a strike that could affect supply chains across Canada and the U.S. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that the union representing over 9,000 employees at Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City have voted in favour of job action to demand more rest time and provisions to combat crew fatigue in their collective agreements. If no deal is reached, the work stoppage could begin as early as May 22, which would disrupt the transport of various products, including cars, coal, consumer goods, fertilizer, grains, minerals and petroleum, as well as commuter services. The affected workers include conductors, locomotive engineers, yard workers and rail traffic controllers. Paul Boucher, president of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, warned that the simultaneous work stoppage at both CN and CPKC would disrupt supply chains on a scale that Canada has not experienced before. The union says it plans to go back to the bargaining table and do everything possible to reach a fair deal for its members. CN and CPKC say they are working to reach a deal to avoid a work stoppage.
