The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Aug. 5, edition that 10 months into the U.S. stock market's remarkable rebound, invincibility is in the air. The Globe's Tim Kiladze writes that Forge First Asset's Andrew McCreath says investors "aren't worried about anything." Storm clouds, however, are brewing. Chief executive officers are already expressing caution. In April, Canadian National Railway CEO Tracy Robinson cautioned a downturn was materializing. She said: "Our current volumes reflect that we are in a mild recession. ... What we're modelling is negative North American industrial production for the full year." Last week, CN pushed out its expectations for an economic recovery into 2024, telling analysts their clients have warned that shipments would remain weak for the next two quarters. Last week, Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad said an "enormous amount of economic pressure" was weighing on the prices of commodities. China's middling economy is a key factor in this malaise. Economist David Rosenberg says, "The historical record shows that, without exception, the economy slows down and does so precipitously in the two years that follow the end of the Fed tightening cycle."
