The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, July 15, edition that the U.S. military has reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports due to Iran's attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that President Donald Trump announced a blockade return and a proposed 20-per-cent fee on ships in the strait, but later dropped the fee at Gulf allies' requests. An interim peace agreement was supposed to reopen the strait and give negotiators time to hammer out a permanent end to the war. Instead, fighting has once again engulfed the region and threatened the global economy. The U.S. carried out another wave of strikes ahead of reimposing the blockade, the U.S. military's Central Command said. Iran's deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, said Tuesday that the U.S. was seeking to prevent Tehran from exercising what he described as "effective sovereignty" over the strait. Shortly after the blockade resumed, Iranian media reported gunfire in the strait. Admiral Brad Cooper of U.S. Central Command said Iran had launched numerous missiles and drones at nearby Gulf countries. There are at least 19 U.S. warships in the Arabian Sea.
