The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, April 13, edition that President Donald Trump said Sunday the United States Navy would quickly implement a blockade of ships in the Strait of Hormuz after failed U.S.-Iran ceasefire talks in Pakistan. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that U.S. Central Command announced the blockade would involve all Iranian ports, beginning on Monday at 10 a.m. ET, or 5:30 p.m. in Iran, to be "enforced impartially against vessels of all nations." CENTCOM said ships travelling between non-Iranian ports can still transit the strait. This is a reduction from the President's earlier threat to blockade the strait and allows for traffic in this crucial waterway, provided it avoids Iranian ports. Mr. Trump seeks to undermine Iran's leverage in the war by demanding it reopen the strait. A U.S. blockade could further rattle global energy markets. Oil prices rose in early market trading on Sunday after the blockade announcement. The price of U.S. crude rose 8 per cent to $104.24 a barrel, and Brent crude oil, the international standard, rose 7 per cent to $102.29 (all figures U.S.). Brent crude cost roughly $70 a barrel before the war in late February.
