The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that the U.S. has seized a sanctioned oil tanker near Venezuela, President Donald Trump announced, raising oil prices and escalating tensions with Caracas. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Trump said, "We've just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela, large tanker, very large, largest one ever, actually, and other things are happening." Mr. Trump has been pressuring Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down. Asked what would happen with the oil, Mr. Trump said, "We keep it, I guess." In response, the Venezuelan government in a statement accused the U.S. of "blatant theft" and described the seizure as "an act of international piracy." The Venezuelan government said it would "defend its sovereignty and resources." It denounced the tanker seizure to international bodies. Mr. Trump has suggested U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, marking the first known action against an oil tanker since his military build-up in the region. U.S. Attorney-General Pam Bondi announced on X that the FBI, Homeland Security, Coast Guard and U.S. military executed a seizure warrant for a crude oil tanker transporting sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.
