The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Canada made no progress in cutting greenhouse gas emissions last year, with federal and provincial climate policies weakening, indicating a likely shortfall in meeting the 2030 target. The Globe's Jeffrey Jones write that the Canadian Climate Institute reported that emissions remain 8.5 per cent below 2005 levels, unchanged from 2023, with the oil and gas sector contributing significantly. Emissions are projected to be 20 per cent to 25 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, falling short of the legislated target of 40 per cent to 45 per cent, said the institute. The gap puts meeting the 2050 target at risk. Rising oil sands production has overshadowed the industry's efforts to reduce per-barrel emissions, while cuts in other sectors have also slowed, according to Climate Institute economist Dave Sawyer. Oil sands production is set to continue breaking records as talks about a $16.5-billion carbon capture project continue. To meet its targets, Canada needs to reduce 40 megatonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent annually by 2030. If the Pathways Alliance proceeds with its carbon-capture project, it could lead to significant emission reductions, said Mr. Sawyer.
