The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, March 25, edition that Canadian mining insiders believe the industry may benefit from U.S. President Donald Trump's focus on increasing domestic mineral production. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that recently, Mr. Trump signed an executive order to enhance mineral production for national security. The order highlights the U.S. reliance on foreign mineral sources, particularly from China. The broad wording could allow the administration to expedite production across various minerals, potentially reviving the struggling U.S. mining industry. Mining Association of Canada chief executive officer Pierre Gratton says, "The Trump administration seems to hate the fact that they import so much from us or any country and want to produce more domestically." Canada Nickel CEO Mark Selby says Mr. Trump's order is primarily a response to China and its dominance of many mineral supply chains, adding that the U.S. will need to rely on Canada as a result. Mr. Selby says: "The fundamental issue is that the U.S. doesn't contain large mineral resources of a number of critical minerals. Ultimately [it will] have to work with projects in Canada for minerals like nickel and cobalt."
