The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Sept. 10, edition that Canada's big-bank CEOs note consumer and business resilience amid trade war concerns. The Globe's Stefanie Marotta reports that concerns are mounting over potential loan defaults amid growing financial pressure on consumers. National Bank of Canada chief executive officer Laurent Ferreira said Wednesday: "The current situation with the United States is not good, and we can't be in a trade war for too long. It's not good for investment. It's not good for conditions for the labour market." Mr. Ferreira said consumers and businesses are adapting well as Ottawa moves to bolster the economy. The banking sector has taken aim at regulations it believes are dragging on business and economic growth. In recent years, analysts and bankers have advocated for looser capital requirements in banking, with calls rising as Prime Minister Mark Carney increased efforts to improve Canada's waning productivity and economic growth. In June, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions reduced the size of the capital cushion the country's biggest banks must hold, freeing up billions of dollars to boost lending for consumers and businesses.
