FP says CIBC CFO not fretting delinquency levels

2024-03-08 08:30 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Friday, March 8, edition that Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce chief financial officer Hratch Panossian says that over the last couple of quarters, delinquencies are starting to come up in mortgage portfolios across the industry. The Post's Denise Paglinawan writes that Mr. Panossian says while there has been an increase in delinquency days, there has yet to be seen much in terms of losses and charge-offs. Mr. Panossian says this is consistent with "common sense" expectations. He says first, delinquency started to rise and unsecured portfolios had monthly payment shocks come in most quickly as interest rates went up. Lines of credit, secured or unsecured, had monthly payments changed to reflect interest rates, while credit cards did not. Mr. Panossian says: "We haven't seen much change in utilization levels over the last year on credit quality. And so in terms of people's ability to make those payments, there hasn't been a big shock yet."
