FP/wire say provisions for sour loans grow at CIBC

2024-03-01 09:29 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Friday, March 1, edition that Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce experienced growth in its Canadian retail business despite setting aside more money than what analysts had expected for potentially bad loans. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that CIBC reported a 10-per-cent increase in revenue in its Canadian business. Its net interest income rose by 13 per cent. The bank provisioned $585-million for credit losses, slightly more than the $583.4-million analysts had forecast. CIBC has increased its provisions due to the current economic environment, particularly in the U.S. office and Canadian consumer portfolios. CIBC has seen higher writeoffs for credit cards and personal lending in its domestic portfolio. Additionally, CIBC has increased its provisions in the U.S. business due to stress in the real estate and construction sectors. CIBC's earnings came in at $1.81 per share on an adjusted basis in the three months through January, compared with $1.94 a year earlier. Revenue was up 5.4 per cent from a year earlier to $1.56-billion in its capital-markets business, with the bank pointing to higher trading revenues in equities and foreign-exchange trading.
