The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, July 17, edition that Corus Entertainment plans to centralize production of its Global News broadcasts for Alberta and cut an undisclosed number of roles. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that this decision is part of nationwide programming changes aimed at improving efficiency while maintaining journalism production. Corus spokesman Annie Arnone said some jobs will be affected, but the broadcaster is also adding roles to maintain news programming in Calgary and Edmonton. She said, "Corus is committed to local news and will maintain its local news delivery in Calgary and Edmonton. ... As a result of these changes, we have had to say goodbye to some of our Global News personalities. We greatly appreciate their time with us and wish them the best in their future endeavours." When asked, Ms. Arnone did not confirm if production of Global News' Calgary and Edmonton broadcasts would take place from Toronto. She said changes will be reflected on air in the coming weeks but that Corus would not comment on any specific individuals affected. Corus recently reported a net loss of $36.5-million for its third quarter, with revenue down 16 per cent compared with last year.
