The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Aug. 19, edition that a hack of Liquor Control Board of Ontario consumer data was the result of log-in credentials being stolen by an unknown group that breached an e-mail platform used on behalf of the LCBO by marketing agency Conversion Digital. The Globe's Temur Durrani writes that last week the LCBO told customers that if they had ever signed up to receive promotional communications, their names, e-mail addresses, dates of birth, postal codes and Aeroplan loyalty program numbers have been compromised. Financial information was not affected. A list of top 10 clients, including the LCBO, was posted on the home page of Conversion Digital's website as of Wednesday. However, by late Thursday, the list had been removed. Conversion Digital did not provide an explanation for the removal. The Globe reached out to all of the listed clients: Cineplex, Pizza Pizza Royalty, the Bank of Nova Scotia, Shopify, Sirius XM Holdings, Goodfood Market, IGM Financial's Mackenzie Investments, Rakuten Kobo and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. In statements, the companies said they were not affected by the breach. Shopify said it was no longer a client of Conversion Digital.
