The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Feb. 19, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney aims to double housing starts, and establishing the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force. Three guest columnists write that achieving Mr. Carney's targets for the forestry sector will require transformation of our wood products and construction industries, as we have never built housing in such numbers. Increased activity in the solid-wood sector needs industry changes. When logs are cut for lumber, about 40 per cent become residual chips. Without demand for these chips for paper, lumber production may falter. Therefore, new uses for these residuals are essential. One option is to replace several idled pulp mills with a few large, modern ones. The Finnish company Metsa Group recently opened two advanced mills in Aanekoski and Kemi that produce 2.8 million tonnes of pulp annually for about $5.8-billion. Investing $6-billion to $8-billion in two or three new mills could yield up to three million tonnes of pulp per year, utilizing around seven million dry tonnes of woodchips. This would help address excess wood chips and bark as Canada expands its solid-wood industries.
