The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition that Canada sent more than $15-billion of lumber and other sawmill products to the United States in 2024. The Post's Joe O'Connor writes that the wood was subject to softwood lumber import duties that are set to rise to 34.45 per cent in October from 14.54 per cent, and potentially an additional 25 per cent Donald Trump-imposed tariff at some point. Port McNeill mayor James Furney says: "To think that anyone is going to be insulated from what is going on with Trump would be delusional. We are a forestry town and people around town are already watching their wallets and curtailing their spending, and businesses that should be ramping up now to hire summer students aren't going to be hiring." Mr. Trump has said the U.S. does not need Canadian wood, and his potential tariff hit, on top of import duties, would be another cruel blow to a B.C. forestry sector that is already in crisis due to a mess of the province's own making. The NDP, elected in 2017, tried to modernize forestry. However, it has resulted in a complex web of regulations, permitting delays and endless discussions without significant progress, while annual allowable cut limits remain high but unachieved.
