The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Canada's largest retirees' association is urging Ontario's securities regulator to finalize its review of inappropriate sales practices at major banks. The Globe's Clare O'Hara writes that at a recent Toronto event, Anthony Quinn, president of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, called on the Ontario Securities Commission to actively regulate these banks instead of continually reviewing harmful practices. Mr. Quinn said, "If these identified issues continue and the banks are considering perhaps tackling it at some future date, when does the regulator look to start regulating?" He made the comments during a panel talk about financial security for Canadians, which included the results of a recent regulatory review of sales practices at Canada's Big Five banks. The review revealed that mutual-fund advisers often face pressure to meet sales targets, which can result in recommending products not aligned with clients' best interests. Mr. Quinn said his membership cannot wait years for the necessary changes to be made. The OSC says it has not commenced a formal investigation of the banks at this stage. The OSC expects to complete a second review within months.
