The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Sept. 12, edition that Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney appears to be taking a Conservative Party approach to governance. The Globe's guest columnist Kevin Yin writes that the Carney government is prioritizing economic relief, adding to a series of decisions that define Mr. Carney as ideologically ambiguous. Many of his actions in his first year resemble proposals from the Conservative Party under Pierre Poilievre. Mr. Carney is primarily a technocrat, favoured by party leadership, which means policy direction is shaped more by circumstances than ideology. The PM's decision to cut the carbon tax seems strategic, yet it is difficult to believe Mr. Carney, an economist and former UN climate envoy, doubts its efficacy. Tariffs and wars are shaping Western priorities, with right-wing focuses on economic and military issues gaining traction. Mr. Carney is adapting to the times, but the perception of his tariff concessions to the U.S. as either a costly necessity or a goodwill gesture will impact our negotiations. Parties are often close in reality, and dogma can yield to rational policy when circumstances change, which is something Mr. Yin believes is worth celebrating.
