The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that a new coalition of financial institutions, telecoms, technology companies and other groups is addressing the growing issue of scams. The Globe's Alexandra Posadzki writes that the Canadian Anti-Scam Coalition, which includes government and law enforcement agencies, is set to launch a national scam awareness campaign next month and is working on initiatives, including a pilot project focused on enhancing information sharing among companies to combat scammers. The cross-sector group was formed by Anthony Ostler, head of the Canadian Bankers Association, in spring 2024, due to growing concerns about scams in Canada. Mr. Ostler, the coalition's chair, said last week ahead of its Tuesday launch: "There are people out there being scammed every day. ... It's scary." Scammers are using artificial-intelligence-generated deepfakes to steal larger amounts of money from the Canadian economy each year. Fraud victims reported losses of $647-million to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre last year, up from $577-million in 2023. These figures reflect only 5 to 10 per cent of all fraud cases. Canada's Big Six banks are part of the 50-member coalition, as well as Google and Meta.
