The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Aug. 22, edition that President Donald Trump's actions have led to a significant outflow of global investment from Canada. The Globe's Tim Shufelt writes that $22.6-billion has fled Canadian securities in the first half of the year, as reported by Statistics Canada. National Bank of Canada's Warren Lovely says, "If sustained, foreign investor apathy could be problematic if not downright frightful." It is easy to see why outside investors have cold feet. Trump 2.0 has impacted the Canadian economy, raising concerns about potential annexation or demands for concessions on trade and defence. Fortunately, Canadian exports under the USMCA are currently exempt from tariffs. Although the U.S. imposes a 35-per-cent tariff on Canadian goods, the effective rate is about 6 per cent, according to RBC estimates. If USMCA fails, as some claim it will, Canada's economic security would be at serious risk. This scenario poses a significant concern for global investors, leading many to hesitate in investing in Canadian securities. The domestic stock market has borne the brunt. In the first half of 2025, a net of $43.6-billion has been yanked out of Canadian equities by non-residents.
