The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Canada's economy lost 84,000 jobs in February, upping the unemployment rate to 6.7 per cent. The Globe's Vanmala Subramaniam writes that this decline was mainly due to a drop of 108,000 full-time positions, according to Statistics Canada. The private sector saw a reduction of 73,000 jobs, while part-time employment remained unchanged. Wholesale and retail trade saw the largest job decline last month with a loss of 18,000 positions (0.6 per cent). This sector has lost a total of 52,000 jobs since October. Manufacturing and construction also faced losses, with a combined total of 21,200 jobs lost last month. Over all, Friday's jobs report marked the largest monthly decline in employment since January, 2022, when the economy was facing stringent public-health rules during the early COVID-19 pandemic. February's labour results were much worse than expected, with analysts predicting a gain of 10,000 jobs after January's decline of 25,000. BMO economist Douglas Porter called February's jobs report "weak from head to toe." On Friday he said recent job growth has been nearly flat, with overall employment up just 0.2 per cent year over year, erasing gains made last fall.
