The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Bombardier has won a provisional order for as many as 60 jets from Saudi Arabia's The Helicopter Company, part of a wider haul by Canadian manufacturers this week at England's Farnborough International Airshow. The Globe's Nicolas Van Praet writes that Bombardier said Tuesday it signed a letter of intent with the private charter aviation company, owned by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, for 12 planes and purchase options for 48 more across its Challenger 3500, Global 5500 and Global 8000 offerings. The Helicopter Company is expanding and needs fixed-wing aircraft to meet growing demand for private and general aviation. Its initial purchase is worth $568-million (U.S.) at list prices. Bombardier, Airbus and many other aerospace companies in Canada are dealing with record order backlogs that are driving sales and profit but putting pressure on their operations. That's being bolstered by a looming wave of defence spending by the Canadian government. Also Tuesday, Ontario's Horizon Aircraft signed a letter of intent with Australia's V-Star Powered Lift Aviation for five of its Cavorite X7 hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing planes with options for 95 more.
