The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Benjamin Bergen is leaving his post at the Canadian Council of Innovators to head the lobby group for the private capital sector.
The Globe's Sean Silcoff writes that Mr. Bergen, who became the CCI president in 2016, will join the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association as chief executive officer in January. The former Liberal political staffer will stay on the CCI board -- which represents more than 175 Canadian tech companies -- alongside co-founders Jim Balsillie, the former BlackBerry co-CEO, and John Ruffolo, managing partner of Maverix Private Equity. The CCI has not announced a successor.
CVCA chair Jeannette Wiltse praised Mr. Bergen's record in engaging governments on innovation policy, regulation and access to capital. Mr. Bergen said that his new role is an opportunity to "try to solve how we recapitalize the country and create the environment for capital to get superior returns." He said it is also a chance for him to continue work he has done at CCI to push governments to strengthen the economy by supporting innovators.
Mr. Bergen said he will focus on creating better conditions for Canadian companies to grow and attract investment.
