The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition that BlackBerry claims to have made good progress in its efforts cutting costs as it posted a slimmer loss in its latest quarter than the prior year. A Canadian Press dispatch to the Post quotes chief executive officer John Giamatteo saying on a call with analysts Friday: "This was a good quarter for BlackBerry. The hard work that the team has done with managing costs is really paying off, with operating expenses now significantly lower than prior year." BlackBerry reported a net loss of $19-million in its second quarter, compared with a $42-million net loss a year earlier (all figures U.S.). The Waterloo, Ont., company says revenue for the quarter ended Aug. 31 was $145-million, up from $132-million during the same quarter last year. Revenue for both its cybersecurity and Internet of Things divisions grew by double digits year-over-year. Cybersecurity revenue was $87-million, while IoT revenue was $55-million. BlackBerry has been working on splitting the two divisions. During Q2, BlackBerry's adjusted operating expenses came in at $99-million, down from $114-million a year earlier. In February, BlackBerry cut 200 jobs and exited six of its 36 global office locations.
