The National Post reports in its Friday, Nov. 21, edition that the clerk of the Privy Council, one of two aides managing Prime Minister Mark Carney's conflict-of-interest screen, learned weeks into his role that Michael Sabia had investments in Brookfield. The Post's Catherine Levesque writes that unlike Mr. Carney, who placed his assets in a blind trust, Mr. Sabia sold his immediately. Mr. Sabia revealed this information during his testimony at the House of Commons ethics committee on Wednesday concerning the review of the Conflict of Interest Act in response to questions by Bloc Quebecois MP and committee vice-chair Luc Theriault. Mr. Sabia is one of two senior public servants who is authorized to administer Mr. Carney's extensive conflict-of-interest screen that applies to more than 100 corporate entities related to Brookfield Asset Management, Brookfield Corp. and Stripe. Mr. Sabia said most of his assets have been in a blind trust since 2009, when he became chief of Quebec's pension fund. After becoming clerk of the Privy Council in July, he learned on Sept. 24 from the ethics commissioner about his investments in Brookfield. Mr. Sabia divested his shares about 15 minutes after learning he owned them.
