Globe says China doesn't want Boeing's faulty airliners

2025-04-21 06:39 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Boeing has suffered a series of self-inflicted problems over the last few years that have added to its vulnerability. The Globe's Gus Carlson writes that last week, China halted delivery of all Boeing jets ordered by Chinese airlines in response to the 145-per-cent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Chinese goods imported into the United States. The move affects 130 Boeing aircraft committed to Chinese airlines -- 160 planes if Hong Kong is included. Each of the company's best-selling Max 9 passenger airplanes costs nearly $130-million (U.S.). A significant contributing factor to Boeing's problems in China stems from the company's own quality issues. The sad reality is that Boeing still has not fixed those now legendary quality problems. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration disclosed last week that it had imposed an airworthiness directive to replace bathroom door latches on more than 2,600 Boeing aircraft. The move came after a passenger had been trapped in a bathroom in-flight because of a faulty door latch that could not be opened from the inside or by flight attendants on the outside. The plane had to be diverted for the safety of the passenger.
