The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that British Columbia has received billions from Ottawa to accelerate major infrastructure projects and has pledged not to obstruct new bitumen pipelines that don't reach tidewater on its North Coast. The Globe's Mike Hager and Bill Curry write that Prime Minister Mark Carney met Thursday evening with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to discuss a new pipeline, shortly after announcing nearly $20-billion in federal commitments for B.C. alongside Premier David Eby in Vancouver. These projects will "catalyze" more than $200-billion in new investments that will help Canada double its non-U.S. exports over the next decade, Mr. Carney said. Ottawa will maintain its ban on oil tankers loading or unloading on B.C.'s North Coast, an important environmental safeguard that had been considered for negotiation in the November agreement between the federal and Alberta governments regarding the pipeline proposal. Mr. Eby dismissed a question about whether federal money was a quid pro quo for not opposing an Alberta pipeline across British Columbia. He said the agreement was a recognition B.C.'s "role in co-operative federalism across the country that we play every single day."
