The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that new audiovisual co-production treaties with Britain and Spain will enable Canada to better support its domestic screen sector during this critical time for cultural sovereignty, says Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Marc Miller. The Globe's Barry Hertz writes that Mr. Miller stressed the need to better diversify the country's multibillion-dollar cultural sector, which Prime Minister Mark Carney referred to as an "irritant" in trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington. Mr. Miller announced the British and Spanish treaties at TIFF on Sunday. In addition to hosting its annual festival, organizers have this year launched, with $23-million in federal support, an official marketplace, in which dealmakers from around the world have gathered for a week of buying and selling film, television and interactive media. Mr. Miller notes that discoverability of Canadian content was indeed a sticking point in trade talks -- "If Air Canada and WestJet can get discoverability right, so can Netflix and Amazon" -- and that the government is still pursuing base contributions from the U.S. streamers. He would not, however, detail what percentage rate that might be.
