The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Feb. 16, edition that many professionals now rely on artificial intelligence for writing, believing no one will notice. The Globe's guest columnist Robert Diab writes that this assumption is increasingly false. The underlying belief that AI-produced content is adequate for work requiring judgment is misguided. It is not. After the emergence of tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, it became easier to identify AI-generated text. Readers familiar with AI content can recognize it almost immediately. This awareness leads to a fundamental question: Why does writing that appears competent often fall short for its intended purpose? As AI writing becomes easier to identify, our use of it will change. We will focus less on the polish of the output and more on whether anyone minds it being labeled as "drafted by AI." In some cases, the answer may well be no: a meeting summary or short e-mail. But in many cases, the answer would clearly be yes, for one key reason among others. AI is advancing quickly and is useful in many areas, but we are increasingly aware of its limitations. Instead of asking, "Will anyone notice?" we should be asking, "Does it matter -- and why?"
