The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Quebec director Denis Villeneuve is the perfect choice to take over the James Bond 007 movie franchise. The Globe's Barry Hertz argues that Mr. Villeneuve has already made several Bond movies, including Sicario, about secret government forces facing impossible odds in a foreign land, and Enemy, which focuses on a man battling duelling, dangerous sides of his persona, a predicament familiar to every 007. Since the Broccoli family sold the rights to Amazon MGM earlier this year, worries persisted that the house that Jeff Bezos built will sully the Ian Fleming brand. Yet the hiring of Mr. Villeneuve signals that Amazon is trying something new and energizing -- while also trying to break free of the notoriously tight creative controls placed upon Bond by the Broccolis; he must always be British, white and get the girl that kept more independent-minded filmmakers away from the franchise. Ever since entering Hollywood after his French-language era, Mr. Villeneuve has excelled at resuscitating storied properties that were deemed either too complicated or too monumental to touch. Dune and Blade Runner were not exactly easy assignments, and yet the filmmaker aced both.
