The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Meta plans to launch a new artificial intelligence research lab focused on developing "superintelligence," an advanced AI system surpassing human capabilities. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that Alexandr Wang, 28, founder of AI start-up Scale AI, will lead the lab, with Meta considering investing billions in his company and bringing on other Scale AI employees. Meta has also offered substantial compensation packages to researchers from major AI firms like OpenAI and Google, attracting some to join the initiative.
Meta's new lab is part of a reorganization of its AI efforts amidst internal management struggles, employee turnover and several unsuccessful product releases. Meta chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg has invested billions of dollars into turning his company into an AI powerhouse. Since Microsoft-backed OpenAI released its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022, the tech industry has raced to build increasingly powerful AI. Mr. Zuckerberg has pushed his company to incorporate AI across its products, including in its smart glasses and a recently released app, Meta AI. NYT says staying in the race is crucial for Meta, Google, Amazon and Microsoft.
