The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, March 12, edition that the BC Securities Commission took a creative approach with its latest campaign aimed at educating the public about the increasing threat of scammers who exploit advanced artificial intelligence tools.
The Globe's Mike Hager writes that recently, the BCSC released a six-song album titled "We Are All F**ked" and produced a music video for the title track. This initiative serves as a warning about how criminals are using AI technology to enhance various schemes, including romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud and fake investment opportunities. The $1.8-million campaign debuted six weeks ago and is gaining traction on-line with fans. It is also garnering lots of interest from fellow investment regulatory agencies around the world, which have asked the regulator to explain the campaign at two industry conferences. A recent Globe investigation underscored how AI generated deep fakes of voices and other media are a cheap and increasingly popular option for cybercriminals trying to defraud people or businesses. The BCSC's Pamela McDonald says, "Our research shows that 71 per cent of British Columbians worry about the use of AI in investment fraud."
