The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that U.S. stocks have surged since the global financial crisis, now representing almost two-thirds of the world's investable market. A Financial Times dispatch to the Post reports that this dominance raises concerns about potential risks for investors. Over the past decade and a half, Wall Street has outpaced international markets, largely due to a rally in the tech sector, especially companies tied to artificial intelligence, which now rivals the total value of all European stocks. However, a recent decline in tech shares has highlighted growing worries about high valuations and their impact on portfolios. Since 2010, consistent returns have driven the U.S. stock market's growth, increasing its share of global free-float market capitalization from about 40 per cent post-financial crisis to over 64 per cent by 2025. The U.S. has been the largest stock market for much of the past century, surpassing the U.K., which was dominant in the 19th century. The S&P 500 index has averaged annual returns of about 14 per cent since 2010. This was boosted by over 20-per-cent gains in 2023 and 2024, driven by excitement around AI and record highs in tech stocks like Nvidia.
