The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that artificial intelligence generated deepfakes are an increasingly popular tool for cybercriminals. The Globe's Alexandra Posadzki and Joe Castaldo write that deepfakes offer a high-tech way to convince victims to part with their cash by posing as someone they know and trust. "There's a massive upswing in the use of deepfakes for fraud campaigns, says Unit 42 consultant Sam Rubin. Consumers are at risk from deepfake videos of celebrities promoting scams and scammers impersonating loved ones. Additionally, generative AI is being used to create deepfake media that defrauds businesses, posing new financial risks for companies. Deepfake scams are popular because of how cheap they are to create, and how substantial the financial rewards can be. Cloning an individual's voice and appearance is now easier, cheaper and faster, with clones becoming more convincing. Fraudsters can choose from an array of options that fit their budget. Cloning someone's voice is "extraordinarily cheap" says Unit 42 threat researcher Kyle Wilhoit. He says there are free tools available on Microsoft's GitHub, as well as inexpensive paid services that typically range from $10 to $15 per month.
