The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Feb. 24, edition that Meta recently warned EU officials to back off their legal actions or risk involving U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting an unexpected alliance between Silicon Valley and the White House. The Globe's Gus Carlson writes that just a year ago, predicting co-operation between Trump and Meta chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg would have seemed absurd, given their long history of public feuds, accusations and legal threats against each other. What a difference a year -- and a presidential election -- makes. The Trump 2.0 world has seen a new crop of "frenemies" spring up almost overnight, especially in the technology sector. Mr. Zuckerberg is notable, and the VIP seating at Mr. Trump's inauguration suggested a thaw in tensions between their camps. Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Microsoft-backed OpenAI's Sam Altman shared the spotlight with Mr. Zuckerberg and Tesla chief Elon Musk. Mr. Zuckerberg's change of stance is not surprising, as Meta faces significant legal challenges, particularly from European regulators who have imposed over $3-billion (U.S.) in fines for various violations, including abusive practices, antitrust issues and data breaches.
