The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Feb. 10, edition that the geopolitics of artificial intelligence will take centre stage at the upcoming Paris AI Action Summit. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe reports that this summit comes at a pivotal moment, highlighted by China's budget-friendly DeepSeek chatbot disrupting the industry. U.S. Vice-President JD Vance will make his first international appearance at the two-day event, co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which aims to harness AI's potential while managing its risks. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is attending alongside officials and chief executive officers from 80 countries, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Microsoft-backed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft president Brad Smith and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Tesla CEO Elon Musk and DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng have been invited but may not attend. The 2023 summit in the U.K. saw 28 nations make a non-binding pledge to address AI risks.
