The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Feb. 10, edition that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that increasing electricity production for artificial intelligence will be a key priority of this year's G7 as Canada takes on the presidency. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that Mr. Trudeau made the comments in Paris Sunday ahead of a global summit on AI that begins Monday. Mr. Trudeau said that this increased power generation should not come at the expense of addressing climate change, pushing nuclear energy as a priority. Mr. Trudeau said at the event, "With our G7 partners, we will be working to make sure the innovators have access to clean, reliable energy to power AI without hindering the fight against climate change." The event was attended by Canadian and French officials, plus representatives from tech companies such as Amazon, Dell and IBM, as well as Canadian AI research institutes. "To do so, we must build the infrastructure necessary to achieve this at the speed that matches AI development, and nuclear technologies will be a crucial part of the solution." The PM added that at the same time "just as much thought" needs to be put into ways to reduce the energy demand of AI.
