The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Jan. 23, edition that Elon Musk is skeptical of a major tech investment announcement made by U.S. President Donald Trump. A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that on Tuesday, Mr. Trump revealed a joint venture involving Microsoft-backed OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle aimed at creating at least $100-billion in computing infrastructure for AI (all figures U.S.). However, Mr. Musk questioned the venture, called Stargate, suggesting it lacks the necessary financing to meet its investment goals.
"They don't have the money," Mr. Musk wrote in reply to an OpenAI post on the announcement. "SoftBank has well under $10-billion secured. I have that on good authority." The dismissal by Mr. Musk is one of his first public breaks with the administration. It is also an unusual move for any senior policy official to question an initiative trumpeted by the President. Mr. Trump claimed the AI announcement as an early trophy, taking credit for the companies' decision to spend up to $500-billion building data centres. Mr. Musk is suing OpenAI and its chief executive officer, Sam Altman, for antitrust violations amid their continuing conflict.
