Globe says Amazon taps into Quebec's maple syrup heist

2024-12-05 08:04 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Toronto-born actor Chris Diamantopoulos's new Prime Video series is The Sticky, which taps into Quebec's maple syrup industry. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe says that the dramedy is an offbeat story that does not lean on stale stereotypes. "It shows us a part of Canada that we've never seen before as viewing audiences -- this sort of Quebecois, dark, criminal underbelly," says Mr. Diamantopoulos, whose past credits include the HBO comedy Silicon Valley. He says he hopes the series demonstrates that Canada has "gritty, layered stories" worth telling on a global scale. Its U.S. creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro drew inspiration from the infamous Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, a months-long criminal operation in 2011 and 2012, when criminals made off with $18.7-million worth of maple syrup from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, which controls 77 per cent of the world's maple syrup supply. The show follows Ruth Landry, a frustrated maple syrup farmer played by seasoned character actor Margo Martindale, who plans to steal millions of dollars worth of syrup from the bureaucrats attempting to seize her farm with the help of low-level mobsters.
