The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that Cyber Monday, the first Monday following U.S. Thanksgiving, has become the biggest on-line shopping day of the year. An Associated Press dispatch to The Globe says U.S. consumers are expected to spend a record $13.2-billion (U.S.) on Monday, 6.1 per cent more than last year. That would make it the biggest shopping day for e-commerce this year. For several U.S. major retailers, a Cyber Monday sale is a days-long event that began over the Thanksgiving weekend. Amazon kicked off its sales event right after midnight Pacific Time on Saturday. Target's two days of discount offers on its website and app began overnight Sunday. Walmart rolled out its Cyber Monday offers for Walmart+ members on Sunday afternoon and opened them to all customers three hours later, at 8 p.m. ET. Canadians, meanwhile, have flocked to malls and on-line stores for Black Friday, Cyber Monday and their surrounding sales period, but at least one tech firm found shopping activity is less fervent than last year. Salesforce reported that on-line Black Friday sales were down 6 per cent in Canada since last year. Salesforce blamed the combination of a postal strike and lacklustre offers at retailers.
