The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Sept. 26, edition that Microsoft plans to use a Three Mile Island nuclear reactor to power its data centres, reflecting the tech industry's interest in nuclear energy. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that meeting power demands from data centres with new or revived nuclear reactors, however, may be challenging due to regulatory hurdles, fuel supply obstacles and local opposition. Microsoft and Constellation Energy announced a deal to restart a unit at the Pennsylvania plant, marking the first-ever restart for a data centre. Constellation chief executive officer Joe Dominguez called nuclear power the only energy source available that is both climate friendly and reliable enough to support Big Tech's needs, implying weather-dependent wind and solar energy may not be up to the task. The announcement follows a March agreement where Amazon purchased a nuclear-powered data centre from Talen Energy. Other nuclear contracts for data centres are also in the works. The needs these deals aim to fill are huge. U.S. data-centre power use is expected to triple between 2023 and 2030, and will require about 47 gigawatts of new generation capacity, estimates Goldman Sachs.
