The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that in late 2022, generative artificial intelligence wowed the market with its seemingly magical abilities. A Globe editorial says nearly two years later, however, it appears to be consuming resources without delivering much value in return. The companies behind this technology need to rein in their ambitions and address the costs and carbon footprint or prove their technology can fulfill its promises. Investors are worried about the growing cost of AI infrastructure. Anthropic boss Dario Amodei said the cost of training generative AI models has risen from tens of millions to $1-billion this year and could reach $10-billion soon (all figures U.S.). Anthropic has received investments from Amazon and Google. Goldman Sachs reported that companies plan to spend $1-trillion on capital expenses, including data centres, computer chips and electricity in the coming years. Goldman Sachs's Jim Covello said in the report that there is no evidence yet that the tech companies making generative AI -- or the companies using it -- had seen any noticeable increases in revenue despite the spending. The only companies making profit, he noted, were those supplying the infrastructure.
