Globe says Air Canada hears AirAsia in deal with Airbus

2026-05-07 07:13 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that AirAsia has announced a multibillion-dollar deal for 150 Canadian-made Airbus A220 jets, promising to double the order if Airbus okays a larger version, increasing pressure on the company. The Globe's Nicolas Van Praet writes that AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes signed an order at Airbus's Mirabel factory, witnessed by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec Premier Christine Frechette. This marks the largest order for the A220 and for a Canadian-made plane. Airbus did not give a value for the order, which is for the A220300 model, seating up to 160 passengers. Mr. Fernandes called it a $19-billion (U.S.) deal, which he said reflects the list price for the aircraft. The actual price paid is substantially less. Mr. Fernandes said AirAsia has also taken purchase options for another 150 of the larger A220 model, called the A220-500, though the jet hasn't been approved and doesn't exist yet. He said he expects Airbus to make a final decision whether to move ahead with the plane in November, with a potential entry into service in 2032. AirAsia's major order boosts the A220 program, which remains unprofitable eight years after Airbus took over from Bombardier in 2018.
